Arts in Medicine (AIM) at the Baton Rouge General brings creative activities to patients through media such as painting, drawing, arts and crafts, music and storytelling in a format that inspires hope and promotes healing
Studies have shown that patients who participate in Arts in Medicine benefit emotionally and physically during their treatment. For instance, visual artistry, such as painting or drawing, provides a creative outlet for patients to express themselves and explore their creative sides. Music, which can be requested at the bedside, reduces stress and lifts spirits. Storytelling and oral histories allow patients to focus on relationships and unique life experiences. All of these activities provide a much-needed distraction from health-related worry and anxiety.
Their Arts in Medicine program also bolsters patients’ self-esteem by giving patients a chance to share their work with others. Many patient art works are displayed throughout the hospital as wall hangings and ceiling tiles, and a special exhibit of patient artwork goes on display every three months at the Manship Theatre in downtown Baton Rouge.
The Arts in Medicine program also has a juried exhibit of local artists who participate in the Cafe Gallery Exhibit, which changes every six months.
If you have a friend or family member who is a patient at the Baton Rouge General, check out this program.
I'm so happy to be a part of this program by having a few of my images hanging at the Baton Rouge General, Bluebonnet location.

This weekend was the open house and award presentations at the Brush with Burden Art Exhibition in Baton Rouge. This is a juried multimedia exhibition featuring all types of art inspired by the South’s natural beauty. I was so honored to receive a Third Place ribbon for my ‘Flying Egret’. The day I captured this image it was cloudy and overcast when this egret chose to land on the top of a tree branch. As he took his time during the landing, I was able to capture several shots of this beautiful white bird against a white overcast sky. This is printed on a 20 x 30 canvas.
A second image, Peaceful Morning on the Bayou, was taken on a foggy morning from a kayak. If you have never been out in the bayous in a kayak in the early, peaceful hours as the day is beginning, I highly recommend it. Large colorful cypress trees tower out of the water as the fog and mist create a beautiful picturesque setting. This was a Merit Award winner. Printed on archival mat paper, matted and framed to 18x24.
"Autumn in the Bayou" was also juried into the Brush with Burden Art Exhibition.
Both of these images will be hanging in the Shaw Center for the Arts in downtown Baton Rouge during the month of April.

I was beyond excited to be a part of this show this year and it was so much more than I expected. It was such an honor to be included in this wonderful mix of exceptional artisans. One of the highlights of this show each year is the awarding of the cash awards, over $12,000. What a humbling experience to be selected to be among the winners of this year's show. My "Taking Flight" Great Blue Heron, won the Mills Pharmacy award. And if that wasn't enough, Robert Mills of Mills Pharmacy stopped by my booth after the awards. It was a pleasure to meet him and thank him personally for his generous donation.
As an artist and photographer, there are times when you question whether or not you should continue - or at least I do. This event was an encouragement to me and it helped give me the desire to forge ahead and strive to be better and more creative in my future works. Just being around other artists lifts my spirits and brings joy to my heart.
I loved being a part of the 53rd Bluff Park Art Show and plan to apply again next year. Thanks Bluff Park Art Association for being so hospitable and encouraging.
I had two opportunities to practice this year as we were able to see the family fireworks on Sunday and then the downtown Baton Rouge fireworks on Monday, July 4th. It was a lot of fun experimenting, and I hope to try my hand at it again next year.
My settings: I set my camera to Bulb mode and had a remote cable release to control the timing of each shot taken, my ISO was set to 100, my Aperture was set to f8, and sometimes f11. (I will change this next time to a smaller Aperture so I can extend the length of time my shutter is open and try to capture longer trails.) I also pre-focused my subject and then set my focus to Manual. I used a Canon 5D Mark III and a 24-70mm lens.
This first image is a composite. This was my first time at this location and I wasn't sure where the fireworks were going to be located. I had envisioned having the bridge in the background as the fireworks exploded. From my location, that wasn't going to happen. I took several photos of the bridge and night sky before the show began and then had to change the direction of my camera to capture the fireworks. I'll be better prepared next year.
These are some of the photos I captured from downtown Baton Rouge and the ones with the family.

September Topic: Composition
Artistic endeavors have always filled her with joy, but for the past several years photography has consumed her interest and she has poured herself into this craft. She loves capturing moments which stir an emotional response that say, this is ‘beautiful, amazing or soul-stirring’, then saving that moment to reflect on it later and to share it with others. Using a camera and computer editing tools to create photographic art provides her an opportunity to make those moments come alive.
This year her work has been exhibited at the Shaw Center, Brush with Burden (a winning image), Baton Rouge’s Forum 35’s Art Melt, and published in 225 Magazine and in Country Roads Magazine. She is also honored to share the Louisiana Photographic Society’s Photographer of the Year 2014 award.
Currently you can find her work at the Arts Market downtown Baton Rouge the first Saturday’s of the month or online at www.cathysmart.com.

Update: So honored to have my "Taking Flight" Great Blue Heron at Lake Martin, Louisiana, win third place!

I have worked hard this year to improve my photographic skills and am so happy that the hard work is being acknowledged.
It is a joy, a blessing and a privilege being able to capture moments with my camera and then enhancing them so they become my artistic outlet.
I also love the friends I am making along the way.
Thanks to everyone who has “liked” or purchased one of my photographs!
